Mosquitos seem to like beer drinkers who recently had sex
The Mosquito Magnet Trial got personal. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Countless factors may (and may not) contribute to a mosquito's thirst for blood over others. And while there's no single answer to this millennia-old question, researchers at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands think they identified at least a couple influences that may increase your insect attractiveness: booze and certain nocturnal activities. While the team's study is still in review ahead of its publication, their experiment offers an interesting and possibly life-saving approach to studying mosquito behavior.

OopsGPT
Whenever AI companies present a vision for the role of artificial intelligence in the future of searching the internet, they tend to underscore the same points: instantaneous summaries of relevant information; ready-made lists tailored to a searcher's needs. They tend not to point out that generative-AI models are prone to providing incorrect, and at times fully made-up, information--and yet it keeps happening. Early this afternoon, OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, announced a prototype AI tool that can search the web and answer questions, fittingly called SearchGPT. The launch is designed to hint at how AI will transform the ways in which people navigate the internet--except that, before users have had a chance to test the new program, it already appears error prone. The tool then pulls up a list of festivals that it states are taking place in Boone this August, the first being An Appalachian Summer Festival, which according to the tool is hosting a series of arts events from July 29 to August 16 of this year. Someone in Boone hoping to buy tickets to one of those concerts, however, would run into trouble.

OpenAI unveils SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine
OpenAI on Thursday announced a new AI-powered search engine prototype called SearchGPT. The move marks the company's entry into a competitive search engine market dominated by Google for decades. On its website, OpenAI described SearchGPT as "a temporary prototype of new AI search features that give you fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources." The company plans to test out the product with 10,000 initial users and then roll it into ChatGPT after gathering feedback. The launch of SearchGPT comes amid growing competition in AI-powered search.

CoF-CoT: Enhancing Large Language Models with Coarse-to-Fine Chain-of-Thought Prompting for Multi-domain NLU Tasks
Nguyen, Hoang H., Liu, Ye, Zhang, Chenwei, Zhang, Tao, Yu, Philip S.
While Chain-of-Thought prompting is popular in reasoning tasks, its application to Large Language Models (LLMs) in Natural Language Understanding (NLU) is under-explored. Motivated by multi-step reasoning of LLMs, we propose Coarse-to-Fine Chain-of-Thought (CoF-CoT) approach that breaks down NLU tasks into multiple reasoning steps where LLMs can learn to acquire and leverage essential concepts to solve tasks from different granularities. Moreover, we propose leveraging semantic-based Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR) structured knowledge as an intermediate step to capture the nuances and diverse structures of utterances, and to understand connections between their varying levels of granularity. Our proposed approach is demonstrated effective in assisting the LLMs adapt to the multi-grained NLU tasks under both zero-shot and few-shot multi-domain settings.

The drones that announced Joe Biden as the 46th president-elect
You've seen them over sporting events, music festivals and political rallies; aerial drone displays have lit up night skies since the technology's 2012 debut at Ars Electronica Futurelab. No longer a niche entertainment spectacle, these light shows can feature massive swarms that are often presented right alongside traditional fireworks displays. And as small drone technologies continue to advance, these swarms are sure to grow. Drone swarm technology, in varying applications, has been pursued for years by government agencies like DARPA, where it's being investigated for military stuff, as well as private research institutions, such as University of Colorado Boulder where it's being explored as a search and rescue tool. Getting robots to not only sense the others around them but to actively work in concert, in pursuit of a common goal, enables the group to accomplish tasks that no individual could do on their own.

London Bar Using Facial Recognition to Stop Line Cutters - Robot News
You are in a pub and trying to order a drink. Someone cuts in front or the bartender simply doesn't see you. In crowded bars, you can end up spending most of your night just trying to order a drink. The Underdog in Central London is claiming to be the first bar in the world to install facial recognition technology. The AI-powered system, which was developed by British company DataSparQ, will help staff see who's next in line to be serviced.

Rekognition still racist, politicians desperate over deepfakes, and a good reason to go to (some) music festivals
Roundup Here's our latest summary of AI news beyond what we've already covered. Over 40 festivals pledge to not use facial recognition: A campaign against facial recognition led by the nonprofit Fight for the Future has led to over 40 music festivals publicly committing that they would not use the technology. Evan Greer, deputy director, and Tom Morello, a musician and guitarist for rock band Rage Against the Machine, teamed up to pen an op-ed celebrating the efforts to push back on the smart AI cameras. "Over the last month, artists and fans waged a grassroots war to stop Orwellian surveillance technology from invading live music events," they wrote on Buzzfeed News. Our campaign pushed more than 40 of the world's largest music festivals -- like Coachella, Bonnaroo, and SXSW -- to go on the record and state clearly that they have no plans to use facial recognition technology at their events." Musicians and fans were invited to write to their favorite festival organizers, urging them to not support facial recognition. Now, the list of festivals that have confirmed they won't be using the tech has grown. There are still a few top names that have yet to respond, however, including Burning Man and Outside Lands. You can see the complete list here. Amazon's facial recognition tool fails on black athletes: Amazon's controversial Rekognition software mistook the faces of 27 black athletes competing in American football, baseball, basketball, and hockey, as suspected criminals in a mugshot database. An experiment by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) revealed the dangers of relying on facial recognition technology like Rekognition. "This technology is flawed," said Duron Harmon, a football player for the New England Patriots safety whose face was false identified in the experiment. "If it misidentified me, my teammates, and other professional athletes in an experiment, imagine the real-life impact of false matches.
